In January KAR Racing announced the team would field cars in two new series in 2010: a Legends Car running in the Semi-Pro Division of the Summer Shootout and Winter Heat Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and an IMCA Dirt Modified Car to compete at dirt tracks in North and South Carolina.

In March the team reached a long term agreement with the Rifenburg Companies of Troy, NY and Raleigh, NC, to be primary sponsor for the dirt car program and immediately began building an IMCA Dirt Modified Car while continuing to seek primary sponsorship for their Legends Car program.

The dirt car is being built by well know car builder and Northeast DIRTcar Hall of Fame Member, Charlie Langenstein; owner of KAR Racing and father of the team’s young driver, Austin Langenstein.  With more than 35 years experience building winning cars: be it in a dirt car series, such as he did with famed drivers like Larry Voss, Jimmy Horton and Brett Hearn; or in NASCAR with Rob Moroso, Bobby Hamilton, and the No. 48 driven by Jimmie Johnson, Charlie is certain to provide Austin with a championship caliber ride.

Built on a chassis by legendary chassis builder Larry Shaw, the dirt car is powered by a RAHMOC 730 HP small block V-8 built by well known engine builder Bob Rahilly, and also  features a Bert Transmission, Wiles Driveshaft, Tiger Rear Axle and other components from well known and respected manufacturers like Turn One, Quick Time, MSD, RCi, Swift and Brake Man.

In early June KAR reached a long term agreement with the Bonadio Group and the Rifenburg Companies who jointly agreed to become the primary sponsors for the KAR Racing Program.

With sponsorship issues resolved, the decision was made to place the dirt car program on hold and concentrate the team’s efforts on the Legends Car in order to compete in the Legends Million Dollar Race in July.  Although the team got a late start in the Legends Summer Shootout Series, their young driver has been a quick sturdy, sending notice he will be a formidable opponent in the Legends Winter Heat Series, posting two wins, two top fives and two top ten finishes, with one DNF, in the first eight races in which he competed.  More impressive is his finish in the “Legends Million” at Charlotte.  With 87 drivers from all over the US and Canada registered to compete in the event, Austin, who qualified 23rd for the Young Lions/Semi-Pro A-Main Feature, finished 9th.

With the Summer Shootout Series winding down, the team has begun to refocus their efforts on completing the dirt car and getting Austin on the track by early September.
